To kick off #TBT here at A Quarter Inch from the Edge, I've chosen a quilt that's near and dear to my heart - A Thousand Triangles.
I can practically hear you, dear reader. What is going on with all this brown? Well, you see, this quilt isn't mine. It belongs to my biggest fan and most loyal blog follower - Himself. It was made way back in 2004 and the finishing stitches of its binding were done very late on Christmas Eve.
There's not a designer fabric to be had among the 37+ fabrics used for this quilt. Scarily, the sunflower print in the upper right is one I used to make curtains at my family's cottage! Even though the points don't all match, the majority of them still have their points... that's a win for a beginner quilter!
I could have really used a Hex n' More ruler to cut all those triangles!
This one is a behemoth queen size measuring up at 93 by 94! I'd like to say that no two triangles of the same print touch, but if you look close enough, you'll probably find at least one!
Not so shockingly, there is a solid to be seen in this project.... though it's the backing and borders. This was well before I realized that printed (let alone pieced) backs were a thing! And borders... oh, how things have changed!
It's quilted very simply... horizontal straight lines in the ditch. And it's the very last quilt to be made on my little 'ole Singer. How do I know that with such certainty? Himself's gift to me was the Kenmore I rocked right up until buying my current Pfaff. ☺
This quilt is still going strong, much like Himself & I, all these years later. And it holds the distinction of the only quilt I've ever slept under regularly. You know what? Even though I'd likely never make something with these fabrics now, I'd definitely make this pattern. In fact, I did a version of it fairly recently for my MQG Riley Blake Fabric Challenge.
Now, here's your chance to go way, way back and show off something from your quilty past! The guidelines are simple:
1) Link up a post all about a quilt from your past. Show off your early work (mistakes and all!)
2) Visit and comment on a few of the other posts linked up this month.
3) Grab the button from the sidebar or link back to this post.
In honour of this first official Throwback Thursday, I'm offering two giveaways - one for those who link up and one for those who comment.
These lovely fat quarters are all from the fabulous Pile O Fabric. I don't think there's a fabric on that site I don't like, even if it is brown! This is how I'd do brown now. The giveaway is open until midnight (Atlantic Time) Monday, August 10th and is open to Canadian and International participants. If you are a no-reply blogger, please leave an e-mail with your comment so I can get in touch with you.
Hope to see you back on September 3rd for Throwback Thursday {Volume 2}!
J
Congratulations and Thanks for starting this link party. Happy Throwback Thursday!
ReplyDeleteYes to triangles! It's amazing to me how far we have come as quilters! I think it takes a while to develop a style and grow some 'taste'! (our own taste) We can look at our throwbacks and see a hundred mistakes, or think what we could do differently or even what were we thinking! Having one that is used all the time, in all its glory...thats a winner!
ReplyDeleteI recognize those fabrics...
I really love looking back at our old quilts and thinking about where our quilting has evolved from. I think new quilters are so brave in ways they don't fully understand. A thousand triangles with points to match up? No sweat! You did it and it is fantastic! :) Thanks for hosting and I will have to start planning now to try to make the September 3rd link up...
ReplyDeleteI have no photos of old quilts and I've given them away - must plan some visits. Also havn't made the OH a quilt yet! The shame of it!
ReplyDeleteHi! I'm really triangle quilter and love this quilt! Not my colours, too but it's still very beautiful! And for these colours you don't ever get tired. This linky party is a great idea and I hope to join soon! Can we show first quilts that are still unfinished? One quilt I thought will be my favourite, is still waiting that I ripp the wrong quilting that I started and to quilt it well. Thank you also for the give away! x Teje

I LOVE triangle quilts - currently I am working on a wallhanging where some of the triangles contain little momentos in little hidden pockets. Done for my son's #1. My phrase for your brown quilt is "it is of it's time" - and I have many too! Love the giveway, thank you!
ReplyDeleteThis is a fun linky idea! I knew it was coming too, but I did not keep it in mind during my recent visit to my parents. I'll have to remember to do photoshoots when visiting family! I just went through some old pics on my computer and found a whole lot of BLURRY, but we'll see what I can come up with! And btw, I still like earthy browns and greens that were so popular when you made your lovely triangle quilt!
ReplyDeleteWhat fun to see all the oldies but goodies! Have not seen one yet that I wouldn't have on my bed. :)
ReplyDeleteMust have took forever to cut all those triangles! I myself have only finished one baby quilt, the rest are tops that need to be sandwiched and quilted. Thanks for the fun.

So glad to see another Throwback quilting linky. It's so much fun to go back through the pre-blog quilt collection.
ReplyDeleteGreat story and great quilt !
ReplyDeleteJust finding your linky party now so too late to join in this week, but I'll try to get one ready for next week! Love your quilt - wow, that's a lot of triangles!
ReplyDeleteI too have an old quilt featuring more brown and burgundy and olive green than I care to think about. But is also my softest, most snuggly quilt too so the older ones do have some perks.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your TBT kick off!
Uh oh. I better not let the hubs see this. He's beencomplaining for a while now that I make quilts for everyone but him! Maybe 2016? :)
ReplyDeleteIsn't it great to look back and see how far we've come. Just because fashion changes, it doesn't mean that we need to discard quilts. We can still appreciate them for the work that went into making them at the time.
ReplyDeleteLike everybody else, I liked looking back at this one. It isn't that old really (I finished earlier this year, around February or so), but I can see differences already. There are still mistakes, but there's improvement too! :) I think it will always be a favorite regardless of those oopsies, I've spent far too many evenings snuggled under it! Thanks for hosting the linky, I plan on linking up as long as I got quilts in the archives! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat quilt and a fabulous give away. 😛
ReplyDeleteIt may not be your best work, but it sounds like it was loved. That's the most important thing.
ReplyDeleteYou're a better wife than me - I made my man a r-shirt quilt about 3 years ago but I still haven't finished all the quilting! Luckily I did enough to be able to bind it so he can use it - safety pins and all :)
ReplyDeleteI love the pattern and am very impressed with the variety of fabric.
This is a fun link up and I'll be sure to join in next month. I'll have to plot to get some of the quilts back. for photos.
ReplyDeleteVery fun link up!
ReplyDeleteGreat look back. Funny thing, planning my Thousand Pyramids as TBT post :) Was going to do it this week, but lost time...maybe next week :)
ReplyDeleteThat is an impressively big quilt for a first one! And to do triangles too.:) Very fun to look back!
ReplyDeleteWow, you were brave tackling all those triangles! It turned out really well
ReplyDeleteI don't think I have ever seen a triangle quilt that I haven't liked; they always please the eye. Yours is lovely!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great theme for a linkup. Now that I am home, I have to look for one of my early quilts to share. It is so much fun to see how our tastes change over time. Lori @ quiltmusings.wordpress.com
ReplyDeleteHooray for starting this up! Fun to see it elsewhere on the web as well.
ReplyDeleteI too have made a triangle quilt, but it was all shades of beige (blergh).
This is great to see an old, loved quilt. It's refreshing to remember that a quilt can be so well-used and coveted over the years. I like throwback Thursdays. It's also great to see others' projects. I'm still so new that I don't have any "old" projects to go back to but I hope I will some day! It will be fun to look back.
ReplyDeleteOh, thanks for starting this up. When I first started blogging last year, someone else had a linky party of this type, but she disappeared from blogging shortly after I started linking up. Since then I've sneaked posts about my pre-blog quilts (I have over 30 years' worth!!) into other linky parties, but I've taken the summer off from writing Throwback Thursday posts. I will be sure to start linking up with your party next month. I love triangle quilts and am glad you shared this one. Tastes may change over time, but quilts are loved for so many reasons that even if it's not your current style, it can still be special.
ReplyDeleteNeat. I like triangle quilts. I'll try to link up next week :)
ReplyDeleteYour throwback Thursday is my flashback Friday. I haven't done a post like that in a while. I should dig some other oldies out the cupboard and grab a camera.
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting this! Definitely fun to reminiscence about a past quilt...I remembered more details that I thought :)
ReplyDeleteCongrats to You ! Thanks for a sweet giveaway !

Rockstar! This is such a fun idea! Now I will need to get some photos of some of my early early quilts so that I can play along. How long is the linky open? Thursdays are my Color Inspiration days, but maybe I could sneak in a Throwback here and there. OR do two blog posts in a day (crazy town!). I started quilting after I began blogging, so there really aren't many to share, and all but one are no longer in my possession, so photos may prove tricky. Either way, what a fun idea, and a massively impressive quilt for your original!!
