Psst... it's just a week away.

Throwback Thursday {Volume 8} is just one week away - Thursday, March 3rd!
Once again, it'll be your chance to link up a project from your dark, quilty past. Here's a little TBT inspiration for you - a New York Beauty wall hanging that I made back in the Summer of 2005. These pics are a testament to outdoor photo shoots. They're among the best I have from this era! Mind you, flopping it on the ground might not have been my finest hour of quilt styling.
Can you believe these colours? I can't say that I have much like this in my stash anymore. But that navy is a solid, so some things don't change!
Every time I take a good look at one of these TBT quilts, I get to thinking about how much fun it would be to re-make it in modern prints and colours. Can you envision a New York Beauty in Carolyn Friedlander or Cotton + Steel? I can!
I even FMQed the name of the quilt (and it's recipients) into the binding. How's that for dedication?
And if showing off your past projects wasn't enough, we've got a giveaway from a new sponsor, Dinky Doo Modern Fabrics. If you're into modern pre-cuts, you've got to check them out!

See you next Thursday!

#TBT {Volume 4} Winner!

Thank you again to everyone who linked up and who commented on the most recent Throwback Thursday post. This month's winner is #38 (with #1 being the first blog linked up and #19 being the first comment on my blog). And of course, it was selected by the lovely and talented, Mr. Random Number Generator. The winner is Lauren who blogs over at Leto's Passion.
Again, she wins a 40$ gift certificate to Fabric Please. Many thanks to Rita for her support of TBT! Fabric Please will be doing an encore as the sponsor next month with an even bigger prize. Yay for Canadian on-line shops!

I hope to see everyone back on December 3rd for our Christmas themed Throwback Thursday! I'm going with Christmas, but if you celebrate some other wonderful festive time... give 'er. That said, please remember that what people really seem to enjoy and comment about in this link-up is a bit of a story. You don't have to be Dickens, but a Flickr pic isn't quite what the collective is lookin' for!

Throwback Thursday {Volume 3}

Welcome to Throwback Thursday @ A Quarter Inch from the Edge! Into the dark and dusty quilty archives we go!
When I kicked off this link-up, I promised you the good, the bad, and the ugly. Personally, I think this one fits the bill for the latter!  I finished it in 2004... about three years into my quilting obsession.
It was only part way through the creation of the blocks for this sampler that I learned about value. The original plan didn't have much white.  In some blocks, you can hardly see the pattern at all.
And borders! A pieced on and a tone on tone white one. What was I thinking?
As little as I like this quilt, there are a few blocks that I really enjoy, such as this log cabin. I'd do this colour combo again in a heartbeat.. though minus the centre square fabric that a quilty friend so kindly pointed out to me "looks like sperm."
The quilt couldn't resist climbing up in this tree!
I used the quilting classic, Quilts! Quilts!! Quilts!!! by Diana McClun and Laura Nownes, as my resource for this project. They released a juiced up, modernized version in 2013. From the sneak peaks I looked at on Amazon, it looks worth having a look at!
There are 18 different blocks in all that muddled blueness. Most are 12" with a couple 6" thrown in for variety. There's a Roman Square, a Fence Rail, some Log Cabins, Ocean Waves and at least 6 different types of star blocks.
The quilting is very simple. I just outlined the blocks, likely in the ditch. I definitely ignored the quilt it every 4 inches rule" on this one. And a solid backing... nowhere for my bad quilting to hide!

In another sort of throwback, this is how I used to photograph my quilts... usually hanging from the deck railing at our home in West Pennant. And I rarely took more than one pic!
Now it's your turn... time to link up your post about a project from your quilty past and perhaps win a little something! This month's giveaway is a 25$ gift certificate from Fridays Off Fabric Shop. Apart from the fun fabric and Le Club, I also love the great shipping rates: free on Canadian orders over 125$. And it's just 2$ for orders under 20$. Anything else is a flat rate of $5.95. I'd rather buy fabric than shipping any day!
How to win? There are three ways.
  1. Leave a comment on this post telling me about some of the things you did in early quilts that you'd never do again - like making blocks with virtually no contrast in value!
  2. Link-up a blog post featuring a quilt from your past. Don't forget to link to A Quarter Inch from the Edge in your post or grab the Throwback Thursday button from the sidebar.
  3. Leave me a comment telling me how you follow A Quarter Inch from the Edge.
If you are a no-reply blogger, please remember to leave a contact e-mail in your comment. The giveaway is open to International participants until 11:59 pm Atlantic Time on Sunday, October 4th. Good luck! Giveaway has closed.

P.S. Hope to see you back on November 5th for Throwback Thursday {Volume 4}

Just 7 sleeps...

... until Throwback Thursday {Volume 3}!
If you haven't linked up yet, next Thursday is your chance to share a post all about a project from your quilty past. The good, the bad, the ugly. Anything goes. Pull out a fav and give it a quilty photoshoot. Tell us a story about it.. or two!

To get you thinking for next week, here's my #TBT for this week.  Fall has arrived here in Nova Scotia and that crisp autumnal bite in the air is turning my thoughts to camping. Probably because for a decade or so, I helped organize an outdoor skills competition for junior high aged Girl Guides. This little quilt is as close as I'm likely to get to camping this year!
This paper pieced mini was completed back in 2011. The pattern was from a long since discarded Quiltmaker magazine.  I was pretty darned impressed with the FMQ I did in the borders. It mimics the foliage in the batik.
Love this little campfire... more FMQ to create flames.
Hope to see you back next Thursday with a story to tell!

P.S. I just realized this is my 300th post! I'm probably the only person on earth excited about that, but it makes me smile, and smiling is good! ☺

#TBT Giveaway winner

Thanks to everyone who linked up and who commented on last week's Throwback Thursday {Volume 2}!

But on to the good stuff! The winner of a FQ bundle of Cuckoo's Calling from Sew Sisters Quilt Shop is..
#29 (with #1 being the first blog linked up and #20 being the first comment).
That's Ann who said "I give away most of my quilts. The ones I give through a charitable organization aren't that hard to part with, but the ones I give personally are a little more bittersweet. Maybe because the connection is a little closer?" and she follows me on Feedly.

Hope to see you back for Throwback Thursday {Volume 3} on October 1st!

Throwback Thursday {Volume 2}

Welcome to Throwback Thursday @ A Quarter Inch from the Edge! If you're new to my blog, I hope you'll take a few minutes to poke around and leave me a comment or two. If you're one of my faithful following, thanks for coming back! ☺
For this volume of #TBT, I've chosen another quilt that's near and dear to my heart... Miss K's Kaleidoscope.
I got to thinking about it as I was finishing off my recent Bali Strip Pop. There are a lot of shared fabrics in these two. I still love how the triangles lead you to believe that the quilt has curved seams. Not a one... all triangles!
This was a tough quilt to give away. Himself liked it so much that he asked if I would make one for our bed. That's a lot of paper piecing! Though it was hard to part with this lovely, it went to a good home. Miss Kate, who's getting married this coming week-end, deserved such a gift for completing her nursing degree. Now if only I knew what I was getting her as a wedding present! ☺
And it has borders! We all know how I typically feel about borders. But I do love that teal squiggly print - great colours!
Even back in 2012, I was looking for ways to use up my considerable stash of batiks. I went for a pieced back using a number of the fabrics from the top. I think this was one of my first forays into pieced backs. That makes it modern. Right, Val @ Purple Boots & Pigtails?
This quilt was finished in the early summer of 2012, just before I started blogging. I don't have the usual details on it that I would now. But I can tell you it's a large twin and quilted in the ditch on every seam, likely with a light colored thread.
Now it's your turn... time to link up your post about a project from your quilty past and perhaps win a little something! This month's giveaway is sponsored by Sew Sisters Quilt Shop of Toronto, Ontario. They've got a great selection of Konas (mmm... Konas), a monthly Kona Club, and very reasonable shipping!

They've offered up a fat quarter bundle of Cuckoo's Calling  by Bethane Janine for Dashwood Studios. I Wouldn't mind having some of that navy leaf fabric for myself! How to win? There are three ways.
  1. Leave a comment on this post telling me about the one that got away - a quilt you loved so much that you had a hard time gifting it!
  2. Link-up a blog post featuring a quilt from your past. Don't forget to link to A Quarter Inch from the Edge in your post or grab the Throwback Thursday button from the sidebar.
  3. Leave me a comment telling me how you follow A Quarter Inch from the Edge.
The giveaway is open to International participants until 11:59 pm Atlantic Time on Sunday, September 10th. Good luck! Giveaway has closed.

Please spread the word about this new link-up by grabbing the button from my sidebar. Here's a handy tutorial on how to do that if you're new to the game: How to Grab a Button! Hope to see you back for TBT {Volume 3} on October 1st!

#TBT Giveaway winner!

Thanks so much to everyone who linked up with the first ever Throwback Thursday @ A Quarter Inch from the Edge. It was a treat to see your quilts from way back when and read the stories behind them.

But what about the giveaway winners, you say? Well, Mr. Random Number Generator did his thing and picked #9 in the linkups. That's Julie @ Julie's Quilts & Costumes who wrote all about the first quilt she ever made in a quilting class. It's scrappy, jewel toned, and has a tonne of HSTs. Pop on over and check it out! As for the comments, Mr. RNG went for #8. That was Connie from Oregon. Congratulations to both of you!

Hope to see you back on September 3rd for Throwback Thursday {Volume 2}!
