Throwback Thursday {Volume 2}

Welcome to Throwback Thursday @ A Quarter Inch from the Edge! If you're new to my blog, I hope you'll take a few minutes to poke around and leave me a comment or two. If you're one of my faithful following, thanks for coming back! ☺
For this volume of #TBT, I've chosen another quilt that's near and dear to my heart... Miss K's Kaleidoscope.
I got to thinking about it as I was finishing off my recent Bali Strip Pop. There are a lot of shared fabrics in these two. I still love how the triangles lead you to believe that the quilt has curved seams. Not a one... all triangles!
This was a tough quilt to give away. Himself liked it so much that he asked if I would make one for our bed. That's a lot of paper piecing! Though it was hard to part with this lovely, it went to a good home. Miss Kate, who's getting married this coming week-end, deserved such a gift for completing her nursing degree. Now if only I knew what I was getting her as a wedding present! ☺
And it has borders! We all know how I typically feel about borders. But I do love that teal squiggly print - great colours!
Even back in 2012, I was looking for ways to use up my considerable stash of batiks. I went for a pieced back using a number of the fabrics from the top. I think this was one of my first forays into pieced backs. That makes it modern. Right, Val @ Purple Boots & Pigtails?
This quilt was finished in the early summer of 2012, just before I started blogging. I don't have the usual details on it that I would now. But I can tell you it's a large twin and quilted in the ditch on every seam, likely with a light colored thread.
Now it's your turn... time to link up your post about a project from your quilty past and perhaps win a little something! This month's giveaway is sponsored by Sew Sisters Quilt Shop of Toronto, Ontario. They've got a great selection of Konas (mmm... Konas), a monthly Kona Club, and very reasonable shipping!

They've offered up a fat quarter bundle of Cuckoo's Calling  by Bethane Janine for Dashwood Studios. I Wouldn't mind having some of that navy leaf fabric for myself! How to win? There are three ways.
  1. Leave a comment on this post telling me about the one that got away - a quilt you loved so much that you had a hard time gifting it!
  2. Link-up a blog post featuring a quilt from your past. Don't forget to link to A Quarter Inch from the Edge in your post or grab the Throwback Thursday button from the sidebar.
  3. Leave me a comment telling me how you follow A Quarter Inch from the Edge.
The giveaway is open to International participants until 11:59 pm Atlantic Time on Sunday, September 10th. Good luck! Giveaway has closed.

Please spread the word about this new link-up by grabbing the button from my sidebar. Here's a handy tutorial on how to do that if you're new to the game: How to Grab a Button! Hope to see you back for TBT {Volume 3} on October 1st!

  1. I follow on Bloglovin and in person. I forgot about this one. I want to make one, but too much paper piecing.

  2. I try very hard to detach from a project from the beginning if I know it will be going to someone. But last year a made a quilt for my husband's boss using the United States Marine Cor colors and it was so hard to part with. I enjoyed the process from picking out the right fabrics to piecing it. I had it quilted at a long arm shop and the stitching had small shapes or our state in it. I wanted to run and hide it, but I knew in the end he would enjoy it more than I would.

  3. I think my second quilt was the hardest to give away, about 20 years ago. Not because it was difficult, but because of the colours. True reds, navy blue, plaids and solids. I still think about it

  4. I'm not sure I have ever had a hard time giving a quilt away because I usually make them specifically for another person. There is one I made for my daughter (kind of in a postage stamp style) that I would love to have, but I could make a similar one for myself if I'd like. Haven't done it, though. I get to sleep under it when I go to her house. The best part of quilting for me is the process--and then it's fun to give it away. Your kaleidoscope is very pretty. I like how the straight lines make a curved look.

  5. the quilt that got away was my first big machine quilting one, my first improvisational one and actually won an award. I gifted it to me sister in law. This whole throw back has inspired me and now my ducks, make that quilts, are ready for a post. Next Tuesday will be my first throw!

  6. A quilt that got away? Hmmm... I make (and keep) so many quilts that while it can be hard to gift or give some away, I am pretty pleased with what I have on hand. I follow you via Bloglovin' and am excited to link up again. :)

  7. I added your blog to my feedly list a month or two ago - love it!

  8. I give away most of my quilts. The ones I give through a charitable organization aren't that hard to part with, but the ones I give personally are a little more bittersweet. Maybe because the connection is a little closer?

  9. The quilt I use as my avatar is a kaleidoscope that I really love even though the colors are a bit outdated. I gave it to a friend years ago as a thank you for all her help when I was coaching. I had never tried PP at that time, but the pattern really doesn't require it & it came together well:-)

  10. I follow via Bloglovin! The bright colors of your quilt are gorgeous, maybe you should make another of this pattern for DH - try a kona block without PP!

  11. It does look like curves! I love the design Jenn! All my early quilts where for others. Rarely in the beginning of my quilting was I attached to them, but once I 'found myself'...I do! Also, I never knew what the hell I was doing back then! I'm sure Miss Kate loved it and is looking forward to her wedding quilt!!

  13. I had great fun making an I spy quilt for my great niece Scarlett. She was born in New York City but now lives in London, so I spent a lot of fun time finding novelty prints with London and USA themes, along with story book and girlhood themes. It was a trip down memory lane for my own girlhood, so it was a little sad to see it go. (I even had Mary Poppins fabric from Spoonflower, some Peter Pan novelties and of course some Beatrix Potter so I really felt proud of the Brit contributions!). Pagenew at sbcglobal.net

  14. Hated to give away the Canadian flag quilt I designed myself and slaved away on. But then the recipient and I got married so now I've got it back, HA!

A kaleidoscope quilt is on my list for some day!!

  17. I just submitted an "email subscription" to your blog! Love the TBT "K" quilt - amazing how all straight lines, yet gives a circular look!

  18. I am new to quilting and made some dolly quilts and hardwood beds (had so much fun building one for kiddo). It was hard to see 'em go, but easier imagining all the happy kids with their very special dollies tucking them in :)

  24. This is a great pattern! I haven't made any that were hard to give. I either create one with giving in mind which makes it easier and I keep the rest, lol.

  26. Actually, I *always* have a hard time letting go of a quilt - mine are handquilted and so take a long time to complete. As I quilt I think of the recipient and their lives, and what is happening in my own family ---- sewing in my own memories! And all those different fabrics - when I got them and where else they show up in my work. Sad, but of course very happy - and proud!

  28. So far, believe it or not, I haven't regretted selling or giving away one quilt! I think for me, it is the making that matters so much. I have taken pictures of most of them, so if I want I can go back and "visit" them or even be inspired by them, but like I said, the creation brings so much joy that I guess once it's done I'm just hoping that someone will enjoy it as much as I did making it!

  34. I have always wanted to make a kaleidoscope quilt. It is still on my to do list. This one is lovely. The quilt that got away was a recent one. I made the Kona Fox Kits and completely fell in love with it. But it was a custom order so I had to part with it. I may make another one yet.

  41. I had a hard time giving away my first quilt. It was made for that specific person, and I did not specifically like the colors used, but it was my first quilt nonetheless :).Thank you so much for the chance to win. Those fabrics are awesome!

  43. My favourite quilt i gave away was bounce - my first bed quilt made up of stars and a scrappy border. It went to a family member and I have since told everyone I'm in the will for its return! Morbid much?

  44. This is such a gorgeous quilt, Jenn!!! I'm so in awe of people who begin their quilting forays with big, intricate quilts. I started SO basic, and super small (wall hangings and table runners). I have YET to make a quilt bigger than lap sized. You're amazing. ps. I linked up this week! I'm so out of it, I missed Thursday completely and since I've been sick I haven't sewn in a week, so I figured it was the perfect time to dig in my photo archives for old quilt photos. Yay!

  45. I don't usually have a hard time giving up the quilts I make because they are generally always made with a recipient in mind. I love giving them to people who I know will use them everyday and enjoy doing it.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Can't recall a quilt that was hard to give away. They have been made with love and I pass love along.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I haven't been quilting long, so the one that away is not a quilt but a quilted pillow that i made for a swap using Jaybird Quilts Lotus pattern. One day I will have to reproduce it!

  48. I did give a quilt to a coworker for a Christmas swap last year. When I drew her name for Secret Santa and saw that 1 of the interests she listed was 'quilts', I knew it was fate. I made her a simple patchwork quilt with some borders in a color scheme I never dreamed of being overly fond of, but I absolutely loved working on that quilt. It was bittersweet letting it go, but seeing how happy she was to receive it did ease things a little. Lol.

  49. I've only ever given away 2 quilts and they were baby quilts made specially for my nephew so i didn't mind giving them awaĆ½

  50. I made a quilt as a gift for my daughter in law. I love it and it was none too easy to give it away! :-)

  51. The quilt that got away from me was Whispering Love. I absolutely loved that quilt but it went to a person who truly needed it more than I did while she was fighting cancer. And I know she has taken it to all her chemo appointments and surgery for comfort. That is what the quilt was made for :)

  52. The quilts I make and gift are specially made with a loved one in mind...for the most part. I really do miss the "Roll, roll cotton boll" that I made for my sister. It was a scrappy delight, I must say! But I know that she adores it and will take good care of it.
Awesome Kaleidoscope! Very pretty! Love the pieced back.

  53. I happily follow you on BL and GFC and better yet...in real life!

  54. I am currently binding a quilt that I've been hand quilting for ages. It's to be my mom's Christmas gift and already I don't want to give it away :)

New here...coming over from Needle and Foot so I don't have a link up to share ; maybe next month.

Love your quilt. There's a pattern in a Scrap Quilt book that I have and I was considering making one some day...yours is certainly an inspiration. It is just stunning! : )
