Throwback Thursday {Volume 13} - 1st Anniversary!!!

I can hardly believe that it's been a year since I started this little link-up. I've enjoyed reading your tales of quilts past and seeing your amazing work. And I've filed away more than one idea for a classic quilt re-worked in a modern style!

For my throwback this month, I'm going back to where it all began - the first one ever. This quilt has been mentioned many times on this blog, but never actually seen! Around the time I started working on it, Google was founded in California and a major air disaster, SwissAir 111, occurred near my home. It's crazy to look back on 1998!

I was entering my second year at Saint Francis Xavier University and I have many memories of quilting this big 'ole quilt on my wee Singer on a small kitchen table in my basement rental apartment.

It really is big - a generous queen size. I figured that if I was only going to make one quilt (oh foolish me!), I wanted it to be big enough to use on a good sized bed. To further illustrate my madness, I quilted it every 2 inches horizontally and vertically. So. Much. Folding. And. Rolling.

After years of folding, you can see some sun fade on the solid squares (clearly not my beloved Kona). Oh well. An18 year old quilt should have some wear!

My quilts have always had labels of some kind... even if it was only fabric marker on the back in a corner! And you get yet another incarnation of my early binding style. Yikes.

I snapped these pics when visiting the family cottage where this one lives. It's a quilt only a mother could still love! In the background, you get a snippet of her other love - daylilies. Remember Daylily Daze?

 I couldn't resist one more money shot!

Throwback Thursday {Volume 12}

TBT - The Farmhouse Edition! This month's throwback was made as a Christmas gift in 2005 for Himself's parents. It still hangs (on rotation) in their home and when we visited last week-end, I took the opportunity to snap some pics!

It's another McKenna Ryan design, Story Book Farm. The house in the block reminded me of the family homestead and I adapted the colours to make it a little more like the Z's house.

The quilt and clothes on the line are 3D. It was a tricky process, but it created a unique look and has held up well for a decade.

It was so tough quilting that little crow! If only I knew about Lara B's Crafted Appliqué method back then. My crow wouldn't have quite so many feathers.

So many batiks... but they work for McKenna Ryan designs! And so many thread colour changes for the quilting. Yikes!

For this month's giveaway, I'm diving into the stash again. I've been a little quiet lately about The Year of the Stash, but I haven't forgotten! The winner will receive a custom 4 fat quarter bundle. Colour, style... it's up to them! A little caveat - it won't be mailed until Canada Post resolves it's pesky little labour dispute. How to win?

Throwback Thursday {Volume 11}

Hey everyone! Welcome to a (belated) Throwback Thursday @ A Quarter Inch from the Edge ! I postponed this month's installment in honour of my trip to Glamp Stitchalot (more on that another day).

This month's featured quilt is well and truly a throwback. Even the pics are vintage! It's the Under the Sea quilt made for a friend's baby. Said "baby" will be moving on to junior high next fall. Scary. Very scary!

 

I have fond memories of making this quilt. There were a variety of blocks presented in the pattern book and you could lay them out to create whatever sort of underwater world you desired. It was such fun creating all those little critters.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't thinking of some sort of turtle inspired creation stemming from DT's current love of "tor-tells". But it wouldn't be these blocks. They seem so clunky to me now! And I clearly hadn't learned about turning my flash off and using natural light for my quilt pics!

I did my (at the time) best FMQ in the borders... the words to Dr. Seuss' One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish if my memory serves me correctly.... and wee fishies in the corners. I still have bits of that dark blue inner border!

 There are some wild and wacky prints in there!

WIP Wednesday - A Fabric Pull of Epic Proportions (And a Winner!)

 It all began with this little pile of loveliness.

During our Maritime Modern Quilt Guild Retreat, I was lucky enough to win a 50$ gift certificate to Dinkydoo Modern Fabrics. Squee!!! I treated myself to the Robert Kaufman Carkai Coordinates FQ bundle. It was a wee bit more than my winnings, but I felt it important to support a guild sponsor! ☺ 

But what began, you ask? Well, the fabric pull for my Glamp Stitchalot project! We need 40 (no... that is not a typo) fat quarters and 8 yards of background. Yikes. I didn't want the entire quilt to be Carolyn Frieldander prints. With her as an instructor, it seemed a little too kiss ass-y.  I pulled out the, well... icky colours from the bundle and determined what the Kona coordinating colour was for the remaining prints (hence the wee bit of masking tape).

 Then I went to the stash and started grabbing stuff.

And it turned into this! How to we feel about those navy prints and the blacks in the same project? Truth Tea, y'all. I asked.

It's not a typical pull for me, but I'm digging it. I plan to add the coordinating Konas - Charcoal, Ultramarine, Tangerine, Creamsicle, Blueberry, Leaf, and Flame. That will bring me up to the 40 recommended. 

Feel free to point out any thing that looks amiss. And suggest a background. I'm thinking a low volume. Or perhaps Kona White. Or would Kona Silver be better. Ack.

Throwback Thursday {Volume 10}

Wow! Throwback Thursday has reached double digits. Thank you to everyone who shares their quilts - the good, the bad, the ugly. I mean the quilts - not the bloggers! ☺

This month, I'm sharing a quilt I made in 2005. Though I'd been quilting for 8 years at that point, I still think of this one as a very early days quilt. It's from a pattern published in Quiltmaker over 4 months - America the Beautiful (I think).

Since it has so rarely seen the light of day, this quilt made the most of its time out. Lounging on the dock... frolicking in the woods.

I loved making the sunset block.  So much so that I made a wall hanging of the three sun blocks for a friend as a wedding present. I suspect it still hangs in her home... bad appliqué and all. Which is particularly funny, given that this quilt has never hung anywhere. Never sat on the back of a couch. Nothing. It sits folded on a shelf.

Though they were fiddly to piece, I still love the look of those Ocean Wave blocks. One can never go wrong with blue and yellow. Classic. But that quilting... oh my. So wiggly.

I remember loving making the yellow string blocks. They used a stitch and flip technique and it just felt so creative. It was very likely the first rumblings of improv stirring in my quilty soul. The trees feature scraps of my (then) closely guarded Jinny Beyer scraps. She was probably the first fabric designer I could name! So many tone on tones!

More solid backings and strange knife edge bindings. You can get a gander of my higgledy piggledy quilting. Oh, you FMQ beginners, take solace in the fact that it gets easier!

I actually remember quilting this one using Glad Press n' Seal on the blocks. I would "stick" it to the quilt, mark on it with Sharpie, and if I liked the motif, stitch right through it. It was a bitch and a half to remove and I don't know that it was very good for my machine! And though you can't read it, the border features these words...

The beauty of the trees,
the softness of the air,
the fragrance of the grass,
speaks to me.

The summit of the mountain,
the thunder of the sky,
the rhythm of the sea,
speaks to me.

The faintness of the stars,
the freshness of the morning,
the dew drop on the flower,

Pssst.... just one week!

Until Throwback Thursday {Volume 10}!

On Thursday, May 5th, it's your chance to tell a tale from your dark, quilty past and show off a pre-blogging creation. It's amazing the inspiration you can take from these past quilts. I often imagine them in fresh, modern prints or re-done in crisp, bright Konas.

Along those lines, here's my Throwback for this week... From all the way back in 2005! I made SO many of these Thousand Pyramid quilts. In fact, the first ever Throwback Thursday post featured one!

I think I made this one for a co-worker's new grandbaby, hence the odd photo snapped in my office against my supply bookcase.

Some of these prints are still hanging around in my 2½ inch square scrap bin. And those butterflies... I bought an ungodly amount at (of all places) Walmart. Oh the folly of the beginner quilter!

Don't you just want to get out that fancy triangle ruler and start cutting into your scraps? Or even that yardage you've been hoarding? Come on. You know you want to!
