Quilty Little Secrets

Okay, I'm jumping on the bandwagon here, but after reading Amy at 13 Spools' post (as directed by the one and only Molli Sparkles!) I feel compelled to share my....

 13 Spools
  1. I eat and drink while sewing. Apparently, that's not good for fabric. Eh, it's washable.
  2. I hate pins. Yup, I can be precise without em. Well, precise enough.
  3. I label my Konas. This is not really a secret... and I wouldn't stop even if you mocked me to my face. Been there, ignored that. And I have an inventory system for my other fabric. Again, mock away.
  4. I don't change needles until I break one. Or my thread breaks multiple times in one project. Or the pattern specifically says to use a particular needle.
  5. This is more bloggy than quilty, but I check my pageviews... a lot. I know, I know, I'm a maker. I'm creative. I supposedly to do this for the love of my craft. But I like to know people are reading!
  6. I want to love Kaffe Fassett prints, but I can't. I think he's amazing... even been to one of his lectures. I keep waiting for there to be a print I can't live without, but it never happens. Same goes for AMH.
  7. Directional fabric annoys the heck out of me.
  8. I don't see why people have so many rulers.
  9. I don't like decorative stitches. My machine has...well, a lot to choose from... and it's rare, rare day that I ever think of using them. And I'd probably end up breaking a needle because I forgot to change to the proper presser foot anyway.
  10. Pre-cuts mystify me. Really, is it that hard to cut things into squares or strips?
  11. And a bonus just for fun!   I don't wash my quilts when I finish them. They'll get crinkly someday... probably after I drop chocolate coating from an ice cream treat on them. And that fancy quilt wash? Nope. Not in my house. Throw in a Kirkland brand detergent pod and away we go - probably with a few t-shirts or a pair of jeans.
How about you? Does one (or a few!) of these quilty little secrets resonate with you? Are you aghast at my willful disregard of needle changing dogma? Go ahead... leave me a comment. Or maybe you'd prefer to open the vault to your own quilty little secrets....

  1. I feel like our lists could be the same...except for precuts. Sometimes I want one of each print of a line but don't want to shell out for a fat quarter bundle. A layer cake or a couple of charm packs can satisfy the need!

  2. I never change my needles as often as I should.

  3. No surprises here...guess we know each other too well.

  4. I eat and drink while sewing too! I don't think anyone pins after reading a few of these posts. As for precuts- for me it's not laziness, it's about getting each print in a line. Bear in mind that over here we pay $4.50 or more for a fat quarter... it's the only way for me, I can't afford fq bundles...

  5. Oh man, I don't change my needles very often either. Generally only if I start having problems. But I will put a fresh needle in for a quilt made mostly with Art Gallery, it's just so finicky. Also not a lover of Kaffe. Definitely food and drink while sewing. I'm not going to stop to eat, that uses up quilting time!

  6. Ha ha. I'm finishing a quilt top and I found a bizarre brown texture on some of the blocks. I smell it. It was milk chocolate. Okay, I sometimes drink milk chocolate while sewing but how does it get there ? Like you say, fabric is washable. Also, are we suppose to wash a quilt after it is finished ? And changing a needle ? Only when it breaks when sewing over pins. And I must also confess about pageviews... as time goes, I suppose I will forget about that.

  7. I label my Kona too...how else can you be sure which one it is! Great list.

  8. I must confess that I do not label my kona. *gasp* I just figure I can compare it to my color card if I need to later on. Or, if I have a large amount of one, I'll just remember it. Other than that, my list is the same as yours!

  12. Love the list, sounds just like mine! Made my "mug rug" big enough to hold cookies too!

  13. Fancy quilt wash?! What's that?
I spent the first two or more decades of my sewing life only changing needles when they broke. I get it!
If I didn't eat and drink while sewing I would be very hungry and dehydrated.

  14. Oh, your list really resonates with me! I am all about checking my pageviews - it is neat to know what people enjoy reading on my blog.

  15. Refreshing! Jelly rolls, cute... But expensive! Same with charm packs and those new ones, the tiny ones? Can't remember what they're called. I'd rather have FQs or yardage. And oh my, what a relief to find someone else who doesn't like AMH. Heather Ross too, frankly. A little too precious (if you know what I mean) for my taste.

  16. Numbers 8, 9 and especially 11! They get crinkly by use in my house, plus I don't trust my washer. :)

  17. Thank you for making me laugh. I relate to your list, especially about Kaffe Fassett prints and pre-cuts.

  18. I never change my needles either! I don't understand what the fuss is about. I only change them when the bend or break. I wish I labeled my kona solids... it's actually a really good idea, and it would keep me from getting confused and using the wrong one!

  19. I change needles because the stitch quality improves. Or when I start hearing the stitching pop, or the stitches look uneven. My grandmother washed quilts with the clothes in a kettle in the yard. Poor Alabama farm family. They lasted and lasted. I like that list. Do people really judge what fabric you like to the point where so many are defending their choices on these lists?? Really? It is your quilt.
