Throwback Thursday {Volume 4}!

Welcome to Throwback Thursday @ A Quarter Inch from the Edge! It's our monthly chance to dig into the quilty archives and share a story or two.
As the darkness that is November in Nova Scotia settles upon me, showing off this quilt from my dark quilty past seemed fitting!
I know, I know. Where is the colour? This quilt creates it's own dark, dark place! But when I made it back in 2007 as a Christmas present for Himself's brother, it hit the mark. He's a big fan of black!

This pattern, Punch Drunk Love, is from Denyse Schmidt's Quilts: 20 Colorful Quilt and Patchwork Projects. If you haven't flipped through this one, you need to! It's a modern quilting game changer!. Of the ten quilts in the book, I've made 3 (one pattern twice). Each time I open it, I want to make another one.

The blocks are... wait for it... template pieced. Madness. Sheer madness. If I were to make this now, I'd be improv piecing the living daylights out of this one. But back in the day, improv hadn't yet made it's presence known to me!
Ah. The solid backing. It used to be my go to... for budgetary reasons... before I realized that printed backings were so much more forgiving and that pieced backs were a possibility. It was also before I learned how to do bindings "the right way"!
Apparently, Himself's brother isn't the only one with a dark wardrobe!
And in case you're wondering, these pics were taken in the summer when this quilt came back for some rehab. It comes every year or so for repairs... a result of that pesky template piecing and a lack of respect for the ¼ inch seam!

Now it's over to you! Time to link up and/or comment. This month we have a sweet giveaway from Fabric Please!, a Canadian on-line fabric shop out of New Dundee, Ontario. And there's 8$ flat rate shipping so you can spend your money on fabric instead of postage!
How to win? There are three ways.
  1. Leave a comment on this post telling me about a colour or fabric combo you'd never choose for yourself, but made anyway for a loved one!
  2. Link-up a blog post featuring a quilt from your past. Don't forget to link to A Quarter Inch from the Edge in your post or grab the Throwback Thursday button from the sidebar.
  3. Leave me a comment telling me how you follow Fabric Please (Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram)
The giveaway is open to International participants until Sunday, November 8th at 11:59 Atlantic Time. Good luck!

And, as if the chance to win wasn't enough, today is Thank You Thursday at Fabric Please. You can pop on over for 20% off Art Gallery Fabrics, 30% off Christmas fabric, and a whopping 40% off flannel. I know I'll have a tough time resisting those kind of deals! PSSTT.... there was a glitch and the sale's been extended until midnight on Saturday!

J

P.S. Hope to see you back for Throwback Thursday {Volume 5} on December 3rd. I'll be linking up some Christmas projects from the past and hope you'll do the same!

  1. I haven't read that book, but I like this pattern & agree that it would be fun to improv piece! I am actually piecing a blue & yellow coloway right now, not my favorite combo, but my mom adores it. She wants it simple, "not too busy", but I cannot resist adding a bit of scrappy style to it:)

  2. I think it is awesome that the quilt gets so much use and love that you get to mend it every so often. That is a testament to how much the quilt means to him! :) I really like the way your binding is split so that it is different on the front and back. No quilting police here, that seems like a very cool method.

  3. Actually, it's quite nice done up in those dark colors. Very manly! You were quilting modern before modern quilting! Perhaps this book was a little ahead of the time, minus the use of templates, that is. Will certainly have to check it out! Maybe it's at the library! Throwback Thursday is a great meme! Kudos for brainstorming it and making it happen!

  4. I don't have a blog so I can't link up but imagine flowers, flowers and more flowers. Then you get an idea of the quilt I made for my mother in law. She loved it, which is the main thing, and I've spent the last couple of years cutting the scraps into very tiny pieces, to hide amongst my usual bright, modern, geometric fabrics.

  5. I love the simplicity of this two-fabric (no colour) project, but templates? I would have guessed just old-fashioned rotary cutting! This is a great quilt for a bloke.

  6. I'm linked and now I'm stumped. I never met a colour I didn't like and so I'll try most anything. I did start out kinda safe but now I'll combine anything. The hunting colours aren't real exciting but... I do like your blacks. Yes, templates can be a real drag till we learn! ;^)

  7. Brown just isn't in my personal colour range and I really haven't made one with brown as a major player. Am I a brown snob - ya maybe...

  8. Pink. I'm just not a fan of pink (or at least a lot of it), but when I was told my little cousin's favorite color was pink, I had to suck it up and buy an armful of pink fabric. It made me nauseous, but I loved the quilt when it was finished! Lol. And I love how we can look back and think of ways to make old patterns easier. I love the black on black color scheme, though it is a bit dark and sinister. LOL.It sounds like it gets used pretty regularly though if it comes for mending each year. :)

  9. I would never choose pink for myself but lately I've been hoarding pink and purple fabric with my daughter in mind. Now if I just had time to sew that fabric into something....

As for Punch Drunk Love - That one is on my long to-make list and I have the book (Pie in the Sky UFO from that one lurking in my basement). But yeah... TEMPLATES!?!?!? Same for the other stripey improv-looking red and white one in 20 Colorful.... Cutting and sewing in non-straight lines seems like something I can do without having to try too hard!

  10. The dark side! It obviously gets lots of love to come back for repairs! I love the design and can't help but envision it in a million and one colors! Color, color, color!!! It is such a trip looking back on our throwbacks...really, really trippy! From color choices, patterns and pictures!

I never give my family a choice in colors! They get what they get!! I'm not a fan of orange, but I have made a couple anyway!

  11. I've never made pink/purple for myself but have for my goddaughter. Even though there is no colour here, it's a great quilt.

  12. I let my husband pick out the colors for my Globetrotting quilt. He chose greens, purples, cream and orange/browns. I had a hard time seeing his vision, but he loved how it turned out.

  14. I like your pattern a lot. And the color, although "plain," doesn't bother me (it's a guy quilt after all), but I get a kick out of it that you made it from a book with the words "colorful quilts" in the title. It's neat that he's still using it and getting regular maintenance on it. I once made a baby quilt for a great niece in hot pink, lime and bright yellow. She probably needed sunglasses when she was on it. I also made one for a great nephew in blacks and bright yellow and one for a friend in yellow and garish green (eew--I blogged about it on a throwback post). I guess it's fun to depart from my personal preferences with baby quilts. I don't think I make quilts for adults that I wouldn't also like myself because it would be hard to stay interested.

  15. I am about to make a quilt for my great friend and neighbor in blacks, browns, and animal prints. So not me, but I think that she will love it.

  18. I found Fabric Please after you mentioned her recently and promptly invested in her continued success, and my continued stashiness. I confused the hell out of her via email, but she was great about it. Now I follow her on Pinterest.

  19. I recently made a pair of baby quilts in red, white and black. Not heinous, but man, oh man, did I ever achieve my "high contrast for brain development" goal! (Generally I prefer either low-vol or brights with a lot of white space.) An unintended outcome was that one of the light fabrics had bicycles and I used that black Koi fabric from Ikea on the back, and whenever I see them I think of "a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle". I call them my "Baby's First Feminist Manifesto" quilts :)

  22. The color I stay away from is red. I did make my sister a red quilt two years ago. She cherishes it.

  24. I love bright, happy colors. I made a quilt for my adopted American mom. She wanted fall colors but preferred the muted tones. Not my favorite but she loves the quilt. Here is the story of Squirrel Kisses if you want to read more about it.

  27. Great quilt Jenn! I'm (as I type) currently working on (and I should be down there but came up for a coffee and decided to "just quickly" check a few blogs...Anja's led me here) a quilt for my nephew in black and white with deep greens, golds and some grey. Bento Box. Although I do love rich colours, I wouldn't have put these together (in fact, I had to ditch the lighter blues and seafoam greens I'd already picked up when I saw what he'd painted his all-finished-by-himself basement in his new house and purchase a bunch more in these colours (oh darn, buy more fabric, I know). So there's my long-winded "yes I have" answer!

  28. I've never heard of (for shame I know) Fabric Please, and being Canadian myself, and loving a sale and flat rate shipping, well, I'm now signed up for their newsletter and blog posts via email! Yay, that I have until Sunday to link up a Throwback Thursday post (I have my photos all ready, just forgot about the first Thursday linky, duh). Also yay that Fabric Please has extended their sale until midnight tonight!!

  29. It is a cool pattern. I think it's funny that it is called Bright Quilt Patterns and it is as you said, a really dark quilt. As for backgrounds - I only spend money and time on backgrounds if the quilt is a bed or throw quilt - on wall hangings I refuse to waste it and use whatever ugly stuff I have (although I do try to match colors somewhat if I can...)Anyway, love TBT - fun to look at one's own journey and fun to look at everyone else's.

  30. Purple is my least favourite colour; but I made a lovely black, grey, & purple quilt for my son's GF that I had a difficult time parting with. It turned out beautifully! annesimonot@sasktel.net

  32. I took a sewing class when I first started quilting again and had to buy a kit with fabrics that were not so desirable to me. The kit was made up of fall colours, dark Browns, greens, reds and beige.....I still haven't finished putting that quilt together because I dislike it so much.
